There seemed to be a beauty to Land Surveying. I started in the swamps of Florida & moved to the Colorado Rockies. I still have my first plum-bob, the crews nowadays say 'what's that for?'
Technology has opened the field to many who would have never made it in the past. A soon to be lost art.

If you are over forty years old and have spent most of your life developing the skills that keep you at the top of your profession without the aid of "widgets", then you are "antiquated". Not only do antiquated geniuses intimidate the other 99% of humanity, they can be replaced by a mail room flunky with a widget for half the price, which is exactly the desired result of labeling techniques and people "antiquated" to begin with. After all, once junior comes in and royally screws up 20% of the project, old antiquated you can be hired for a fraction of the total cost to fix it.:>)

On the bright side, antiquated geniuses generally do well as consultants. I remember what Dad told me,"If you are hired as a consultant, never go to work full time for the the company that hired you because they think a consultant knows what he is doing. Once you are on the payroll they assume that you didn't know anything or you wouldn't have quit consulting."

Great analogy. I deal with this everyday. People come in occasionally and scoff at the price of the products I sell. However, the people who make, sell and/or own these products know the quality and detail that goes into each and every piece.
What I love is that I am encouraged to be honest, if the want a product that is less expensive up front go elsewhere. But if you want a quality product that you will last and you will actually love...your in the right place.

("I began my surveying career in the swamps of SC. Digging for lighter knots and scratchin’ chiggers got you a paycheck. I apprenticed under one of the best Land Surveyors I have met in the 25 years I’ve been in this business, Joel Floyd. He taught basics.")

<I>

<I>

("Do you believe that a “Construction Surveyor” should have a background in Land Surveying?")

("If so, should they be licensed by the Board of Engineers?")

Would that license read “Land Surveyor” or “Construction Surveyor”?

("If not, should there be some kind of national standard certification program adopted or should it be left as is?")

Good catch. My comment now makes any sense. What hypocracy! I followed a comment about using tact with a smart ass remark.

Since I joined the industry as a kid I thrived on knowledge. Resulting in making party chief at age 18 and lead construction surveyor by 20. Being raised proper to respect my elders even laborers were older. I would let superiors take credit for my ideas by asking what if? People that don't layout just don't see the big picture. Using some tact we can provide time & cost saving insight that clients will greatly appreciate, and insure you will be doing future work.
